Discourse in the Public Realm
Recent global developments are having an unquantifiable impact on civil society in South Africa. These developments are not just about the global economy. Rather, they include less overt and more creeping trends such as the rise of religious fundamentalism, new waves of social and political conservatism, food security related to environmental degradation and new forms of colonialism.
Adding to the serious challenges already faced by
civil society and the non-profit sector, one of the key
issues that continuously needs to be foregrounded is
discourse in the public realm - and the extent to
which discursive space has been impacted and
limited. While some spaces have been closed, have
others been opened up? What are the conversations
we need to be having now to ensure that we
have our eye on the future? |

The Inyathelo Conference 2009 - Our World, Our Responsibility: Re-energising Civil Society
The world has undergone fundamental change. And so must we if we are to ensure the durability of civil society. The questions we have to ask are myriad: Does this new era bring with it a need for the role, shape and modus operandi of civil society to change? Are we operating in the most effective manner possible? Are we receiving the information
that we require to do our work? Are we engaging with government effectively? What are the things we don't talk about and don't say? |

The role of governing boards in ensuring the resourcing of non-profit organisations (NPOs) is sometimes viewed as an uncomfortable topic. The perception is that board members should only concern themselves with giving strategic direction and playing an oversight role to ensure the accountability of the organisation. Such a narrow focus is insufficient. |
